  • Tuesday observations

For some reason, I always have my “deep thoughts” on Tuesdays.
#1 – It seems that a lot of people get out of work at 2pm around here. Anyone who has been on the Bay Bridge and especially Highway 4 (the bane of my existence) know this. What kind of job lets you out at that hour?
#2 – While a cool idea, those Swiffer things don’t do anything except wet down the floor. They certainly don’t clean very well.
#3 – I did my holiday cards the other day for DCRP sponsors and friends. I have 4 envelopes left but no more cards. Picking out generic holiday cards isn’t easy. I don’t want religious cards, or cards that are too cheesy (“May all the quiet joys of this gentle season be yours”). That leaves you with some pretty boring holiday cards. Oh well, it’s the thought that counts, right?
#4 – While doing those cards, I was reminded that I cannot write by hand anymore. After college, I started typing 99% of things I recorded, and now I need to go back to Mrs. Lim’s handwriting class at Foster City Elementary School.
Well that’s all for tonight. It sure does get cold out here. It was 6:30pm and 41 degrees. Yeah, I know that’s not that cold, but it’s California for God’s sake.
Tomorrow is Return of the King. Yay!

    The Consultant’s Curse:
When the customer has beaten upon you long enough, give him
what he asks for, instead of what he needs. This is very strong
medicine, and is normally only required once.

  • Mt. Bug

While working on some code for the upcoming DCRP redesign that Willo has been working on, I came across a frustrating bug. It’s probably the coolest-looking programming error I’ve made, though:

I’m too tired to try to fix it tonight.

  • More bandwidth

I’m not missing DSL at all. This week Comcast doubled the download speeds, up to 3.5 Mbps. I can download at 440 kb/sec — MUCH better than before and light years ahead of my old DSL connection in SF. Too bad the upload speed is stuck at 256 Kbps – that’s where I really need the speed boost.

Last night I got an e-mail from a ENT surgeon who wasn’t happy with the color on his new Nikon digital camera. So, like many people, he sent me a comparison picture taken with his new camera and his old camera (some Sony model).
The problem was that his comparison picture was a person with his face ripped open in the middle of surgery. It was NOT pleasant. Thankfully, I have a strong stomach so I survived. I answered his question but said “I could’ve done without the pictures.”
Before anyone asks, no, I’m not posting those pictures here.

  • Angels in America

If you have HBO, check out Angels in America. If you don’t, steal it from the neighbors. It’s a 6 hour miniseries about AIDS in the 80’s and 90’s. The acting (by Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, Emma Thompson, and more) is great, and you definitely feel the pain of the people on the screen. It’s a little over-the-top at times, but I assume the original play was the same way.
