  • Offerings

Well, I made an offer on a house today in the Oakland Hills. For those unfamiliar with the Bay Area real estate market, nothing in a desirable area goes for asking price. I offered about 18% above the asking price, which quite possibly is not be enough. My agent thought I should go even higher, but I wasn’t comfortable with it. At last check there were three other offers… so cross your fingers, I’ll know tomorrow what happened.

    • Good Luck! I hope your offer is accepted.
Probably too little, too late – but have you considered writing a letter to the owners? As crazy as it seems, sometimes buying a house isn’t just about the money. The sellers are leaving a place where they’ve most likely created a lot of memories (as I’m sure you know), and a letter describing how excited you are about the property and how well you’ll take care of it, etc. can sometimes make a difference.
Again, good luck and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!

    • Here in DC there are apparently “escalation clauses” (or something to that effect) in offers…wild!
Fingers crossed for you, here, too.

    • Denise, the realtor and I talked about doing such a letter, but ultimately the price and the contingencies are more important than any cute letter I could write.
