  • Summer fruit picking is back

After my appointment in Antioch today I drove “next door” to Brentwood. Lo and behold there was fruit to be picked! Since I was by myself I bought pre-picked stuff, but if you want to pick cherries, peaches, apricots, or strawberries, now’s the time to go! I was told that this year’s cherry crop is pretty lousy (low yields), but they sure tasted good!

  • Busy months

Much to my surprise, May turned out to best the DCRP site’s best month ever — even better than the last holiday season. For the first time the site broke the three million visitor mark. In fact, we had over 3.1 million visitors! I’m not sure exactly why things are so busy now (not that I’m complaining), but I’m thinking it may be people shopping for a camera for their summer vacations.
Speaking of summer vacations, I somehow have to finish ten reviews before I leave for my trip to Europe in early July. Yuck.

How much does it cost to ship a 12 pound cat overnight?

  • Volunteering

In the near future I’m going to find out about doing some volunteer work. I’m doing it for several reasons: to meet new people, get out of the house a little bit, and give back to the community. Being an animal lover I’ll probably volunteer at a shelter or rescue foundation.
A wise man once told me that volunteering is a good way to meet like-minded people (read: giving, unselfish) — and I hope that’s the case.

  • Zoe’s trip to the vet

I haven’t had much to say, which is why it’s been so quiet around here lately. I do have a few stories though…
Last Thursday I took Zoe to the vet for the first time (she had gone before I adopted here as well). As you probably have noticed, Zoe has gone from a scrawny kitten to a chubby cat in six months, so I wanted to make sure that she was healthy. The answer is, yes, she’s healthy — she’s just prone to weight gain. So, now she’s on a different diet food, and hopefully that will help her drop a pound or two.

  • It’s about time

If you ever park in San Francisco then you must get one of these bad boys. Yes, it’s a debit card that can be used in parking meters! They come in $20 and $50 amounts and cannot be refilled (groan). You can buy them at these locations.
I got my $20 card today and I can’t wait to use it. I park at a lot of meters in SF and some of them cost 5 cents a MINUTE — and of course I never have that much change. I wonder how quickly I’ll burn through my card?
Huge thanks to my friend Marc for tipping me off about these!

  • Goodbye Pete

Pete, the family cat, was put to sleep this afternoon after a battle with kidney failure. She would’ve been 14 this month.
I still remember the day we got her, back when I was 15 years old. We went to the local humane society and I quickly picked out a really cute kitten. But, this kitten hissed, and my mom and sister said “no way!”. They led me over to another cage with a small tuxedo kitten inside it. Mom and sis liked this cat because it had a loud purr, and we took her home with us.
Pete wasn’t the most cuddly cat… she loved to scratch and bite (and hiss, ironically) … and she had a penchant for destroying our furniture. But she definitely loved being around people, and always greeted you when you got home.
It was a hard decision (that my parents had to make) to put her down… but she wasn’t doing well anymore. She wasn’t eating, she was losing weight, and she slept all day. I stopped by this morning to say goodbye… which was hard… though I don’t think that reality has set in yet. I’ll miss that cat… RIP.
